DC Comics 52 sex controversy

September 22, 2011

As you all know by now about the “sex” controversy in this weeks new books.
As a woman who has read comic books for a long time,I can said I don’t give a crap about this.
Now,you’ll may say “but I thought you would be offended by this because you’re a fangirl?”
Well,guessed what? I’m not.
Why? you ask,here’s my reasoning:
1:These books were written and draw by men,so it’s mainly fanboy service.
2:I’m not a fan of Starfire,I am a Catwoman fan but she’s known for this kind of behavior before.
3:Not all of DC’s women are acting like this.for example Wonder Woman,Supergirl, and Batgirl are not acting like sex crazed women.
There may be a reason why DC are writing Starfire and Catwoman this way,but we don’t know yet.
What I want in a comic book is a great story & good character development.
I mainly read Marvel books,so I’m not offended by this.
If this was done to say X-23 or Sue Storm,I would be really pissed off.
And remember this:
There’s not a whole lot of female readers buying the new 52,so DC is just targeting the male readers that are buying the books.
Yes,I am reading the new DC books, but I’m not interested in reading Catwoman.
So,there you have it,my opinion on this controversy.

DC 52 reviews

September 13, 2011

I may as well write my DC 52 review.

I’ll start with the title I was interested in reading-Swamp Thing #1

We see that Alec Holland and Swamp Thing are separate beings,(which I found very neat)
We also see cameos from the main heroes.
Story I thought was good for the first issue.
I’m starting to like Scott Snyder writing this series.

Overall this is a great first issue and for Swamp Thing fans.
I give it 5 out of 5

Next is Animal Man #1
I thought I was going to hate this book, but to my surprise I loved it.
We start off with Animal Man reading is an interview with his wife.
Then he has to go stop a crazed man in a children’s hospital.
I wouldn’t spoil the rest of the issue, but let’s just say I was a bit surprised by the ending.

Overall this is a another great first issue.
5 out of 5

Next is Batgirl #1
This is the book that’s gotten a lot of attention, mainly because Barbara Gordon is no longer paraplegic(I really don’t care, but that’s for another time)
The Story begins with a new foe who calls himself Mirror.
And he’s killing those are on his list.
We also see that the he’s now after Barbara Gordon.
Then we see that the events of The Killing Joke did happen and she was paraplegic.
But she can now walk(I want to know how she got to walk again??)
I like the writing from Gail Simone.
The art is good too.

Overall this a good issue and I think fans of Barbara Gordon will like this series too.

4 out of 5

Next is Action Comics #1
I don’t read nor do I like Superman,mainly because he’s too perfect.
But Grant Morrison is one of my favorite writers,so I picked up the book.
I must say this was a very good book.
I love the fact that Superman is not the perfect hero he was written of the years.
He’s more of a vigilante than a superhero.
He works for a rival newspaper.
Grant Morrison got me to read a really good book.

Overall this was a good read.
4 out of 5

Next is Detective Comics #1
I really can’t say much of this issue because it was boring at the beginning, but it got interesting at the end.

Book was ok,but it could have been better.
3 out of 5

Last book is Static Shock #1
I didn’t like the book all that much.
I would skip this book, unless you’re a fan of the character.
2 out of 5

Well, that’s the end of my DC 52 review.
Hopefully I’ll post more comic reviews in the future.

Otakon 2011

August 3, 2011

Jokingly I call this FightCon 2011 since I had to verbally beat someone down almost every day. One guy told my friend to go fuck herself, another guy was bothering my photographer friend (not Pat), and one dealer was selling Nazi stuff. Not stuff from Hellsing or Hetalia, straight up Adolph Hitler-wore-that-shit Nazi stuff.

I worked in the dealer’s room for majority of the con. I went to no panels, rarely met up with people, and didn’t even get a program guide. From a dealers point of view, this is a great con to come and clear out old anime and manga, and make some money. From what I could tell however, there was not much in the ways of deals going on. The one thing anime convention dealers have never gotten the hang of, was actually giving out good deals. Comic dealers seem to have it down to a science, but anime dealers have no idea what that means.

The panels were pretty boring; I skipped out on the FUNimation one, and only caught a few minutes of a few other ones. Otakon also overlapped big events from what I was hearing. A concert, the masquerade, and the Full Metal Alchemist movie were all shown at the same time on Saturday. Whomever made the schedule dropped the ball on that. One big plus was that they used the Hilton as extra con space, but that still didn’t help with the crowds. Otakon needs to start capping attendance again. There were many points during the weekend where you could not walk anywhere because of the crowds.

The cosplay was both good and bad, but what do you expect. Overall, I had a great con. I can’t wait for next year.

And now, some pictures.

Wizard World Philly

July 15, 2011

Philly this year was…unique, to say the least. The bigger hall was a nice touch, but the upstairs and downstairs tomfoolery to get to different rooms was troublesome. I also found it difficult in general to figure out where, precisely, I needed to be for panels and crap.

However, once inside the general con floor, things were laid out fairly decently. Wrestlers were together. Famous people together. Comic things together. Retail things together. It was nice not running across people seemingly randomly tossed together. Another nice part of the new layout was the inclusion of groups and clubs. The 501st had their own table as usual, but there was a sizable group of tables together for other cons, school groups, and other organizations. There was somebody with the artists who had speakers, a mic and a loudspeaker that were just annoying as hell, though. I’m trying to talk to the person at the table next to you; why do I need to listen to your unst unst?

My biggest issue was the lack of places to sit down. There really was no where you could seat yourself, which I guess I am becoming spoiled about with Baltimore Comic Con. I ended up sweet talking my way behind someone’s table to sit on the floor to eat my lunch. Was semi aggravating.

The cosplay photoshoot was kind of neat, but it was poorly organized. It was hard to hear or understand direction, and we only had a flat surface on which to pose. People snapping photos were kind of going crazy and stepping closer and closer to us, which then put them in other peoples’ shots and it was just…kind of funny, actually, watching the guy freak out.

Costume contest was long, as always is. It was nice to see at least one of the judges who knows what the hell he was talking about when judging the costumes, and he definitely gave a damn about presentation and construction. The MC was…pretty terribly unfunny, misogynistic, and hit on the girls far too much for my tastes. Getting really sick of seeing costume contests MC’d by dudes who just want to drool over the contestants like prepubescent teenagers.

Generally, a good con. I like to call it my “hometown” convention, since it was the first I ever went to. It was really nice to get back into the swing of comic cons, since 2010 was a pretty quiet year for me. :’D

I have work the day after this comes out but I don’t even give a rat’s donkey, I am going to see this movie at midnight.

I also cursed so much about this to my boyfriend, I think he might be scared I have magically transformed into a Super Sailor Han.

Goddamn.

DC doesn’t care about their female audience

June 21, 2011

At a recent press conference, DC had this to say about their target audience:

“The target audience are men age 18 to 34 though they do realize that they have readers in other demographics.”

If you do realize you have readers in other demographics why not make it 50/50. You’re putting out 52 titles this September. How many of those series is focused on a female character? Batgirl and Wonder Woman, we know will be focused on a strong female character. And we do have the new Birds of Prey line-up. But that’s three. What else do you have to offer your female readers DC? Because this is you ignoring a whole demographic. Yes, women are in the minority compared to male readers but you’re trying to make sales (cause for the past couple months DC’s monthly sales have been going down). So why not try to appeal to this demographic. Do some freakin focus group studies. See what the female fans want. Do something like Women of Marvel.

I can say that I am really disappointed in DC right now and this put me over the top. You’ve ruined characters for me (See: Tim), you’ve continued to bring out crappy storylines and now you have basically said women are not in your target audience. I loved DC since I was a kid but it’s safe to say they will get little to no money from me until it shapes up.

Oh and that Green Lantern screenplay was horrendous. I’m a Film/Media student and it is just insulting that I would bust my ass to get my A- in a class but industry professionals can get away with that horribly written script. Geoff Johns should’ve just written it. He studied the same degree I am in. He could’ve written that screenplay better.

Green Lantern movie review

June 18, 2011

I saw Green Lantern today and here’s my review:
They give you the origins of the GLC at the beginning of the movie (which is great for those that are new to the series)
I and other comic book fans were afraid that Ryan Reynolds would ruin the movie, but in fact he actually makes the movie more fun and enjoyable to watch.
He does a good job playing Hal Jordan.
Mark Strong as Sinestro was great even though he doesn’t appear a lot in the movie.
Blake Lively as Carol Ferris was a mix bag.
She’s either good in one scene but awful in another.
If she wants to be a villan in the next movie, she’s going to have to improve her acting.
The Origin of Parallax I found interesting and well done (even though they changed it from the comics)
The much talked about CGI was too a mix bag:
In some scenes it looks great but fake in another.
The CGI suit looks good, but still looks weird.
The story was ok,not groundbreaking.
I really wish they added more screen time of Sinestro and the other GLC members.
Overall I still enjoyed watching it.
I give it 3 out of 5.
It has potential to be a great movie franchise for WB and DC,but they need to make improvements.
They need to get better writers and they need to work on the CGI.
You have to stay after the post-credits:
I can’t tell what it is,but It looks awesome 🙂

In defense of the stealth convention photographer…

June 17, 2011

I’ve been reading many anime forums lately, where people are discussing perverts and stealth photographers. Apparently, they are one in the same.

The photographer I use does stealth photography. He doesn’t do it to be creepy. He doesn’t want to bang you or do anything else dirty to you. He’s not even thinking that way of you when he takes a stealth photo. He really just sees you (the cosplayer) in a certain light, doing something mundane, but finds beauty in it. Again, I assure you, he doesn’t want to sleep with you, just take my expert word on that. In fact, I’m willing to bet many guys (and girls) who take stealth photographs see something beautiful before them, and simply want to capture that moment. You might be the most convincing model in the world, but nothing will ever replace an honest to goodness real feeling;

See that? He didn’t ask her to pose. She was probably day dreaming, and frankly, this is a lovely picture. Do you see anything misleading about it? Probably not, because it’s not there.

Of course, maybe I’m lucky. Most of the photographers I know who are stealth ones, tend to not take pictures of people eating, talking on phones, or looking generally stupid. They only want to capture something beautiful. So please, before you go off about how people aren’t “real” photographers unless they ask for a picture, think again. I don’t think anyone working for Life or Time asks people to stop and pose as they run away from fire or whatever.

DC Reboot

June 6, 2011

I am totally going to have to take back my last post on this.  I won’t make a new one until we know more about what’s going on with this.  I’d rather reserve judgment till I know everything they plan to do.  Though I will admit I am excited to see JLI being brought back.

Something I’ve read lately that I’ve liked is Avengers Academy.  I have been reading this series since it started and I thought it was a promising new title.  It kind of dulled up until now.  I think they have changed writers and this new writer has captured my interest again with how he is shaping these characters.  I cannot wait for the next issue.  If you guys have never read it before I’d suggest picking up the Giant Size issue that was recently released.  You could probably start from there and jump into the series no problem.  Marvel just released a .1 issue of Avengers Academy as well.  If you didn’t know the .1 issues are meant to allow people to jump into a series without having to catch up on issues.
