X-Men: First Class

June 6, 2011

If you didn’t see it this weekend, you are lame. I saw it twice! Yes! Twice!

The plot is basic. We open inPolandduring the height of Nazi control, where Erik Lensherr (Magneto) is being torn away by his parents. In his anger, he manages to bend the iron gates, trying to get to them. He is being watched by a Dr. Sebastian Shaw who takes a keen interest in him. He brings Erik up, and tries to make him use his powers. The only way to get his powers to activate is by shooting his mother in front of him. Over in a surprisingly peaceful England (which by all means should be getting the shit bombed out of them if this is roughly the same time), Charles Xavier thinks he hears a robber in the house. Armed with a baseball bat, he comes across his mother in the kitchen. Turns out it isn’t his mother; it’s a young blue girl named Raved. The two become friends. Some years go by, and Erik and Raven are out at a pub living a normal life, while Erik is going around the globe trying to locate Shaw in order to kill him. After some really intense scenes by Erik, Charles is named Professor Charles Xavier. While drinking to celebrate, a lovely young CIA agent approaches him, asking him for his help.

Yes, I glossed over the plot and ignored some rather key points (such as Emma Frost being involved with Shaw), but you get the idea. The cast was perfect, with the only weak link being January Jones, whom was basically acting like Betty Draper (Mad Men) through the film, which leads me to believe she is a terrible actress. The most compelling actor in the whole film is Michael Fessbender, who plays the very torn Erik. I honestly feel bad for him, and can even understand why he became Magneto. James McAvoy plays a very adorable Charles, who grows from trying to use a mutation line as a pick up, to really being concerned for the whole world, mutants and humans alike.

The dynamic between Charles and Erik is very real, and very powerful in this movie. While they claim to be like brothers, the love they have for each other (especially the love Erik has for Charles) is clearly much deeper, as you can see in the last 20 minutes of the film. While their sub plot is very prominent, the other sub plot of acceptance in the human world is also dominating. Raven is really a blue skinned, red haired, and gold eyed shape shifter, but she stays in her human form (blonde hair brown eyes) in order to fit in. When she meets Hank, who has beast like feet, they find common ground in wanting to fit in. All of these characters save for Charles and Erik, just want to fit in. The other characters, such as Angel and Darwin, are not given ample time to grow as a character; Angel joins the “bad guys” andDarwinis killed off quickly. The only thing this movie might suffer from is having too many characters with too little time, but you won’t really notice, nor care. You will be wrapped up in the Charles/Erik and Raven/Hank plots to care.

The building blocks are all put in place for what could be a great franchise. If they keep the two main sub plots in tact for future films, they will have a very complex set of characters, especially with Erik. For now I guess we have to wait and see. Also, the cameos are really funny and well done, and don’t bother sitting through the credits: There is nothing at the end of them.

Han’s Movie Thoughts: Green Hornet

June 5, 2011

Green Hornet. Damn that sucked. 😐 My main issue was that our main character was SO out of reach. He was an ass, for the ENTIRE movie, there was nothing redeeming about him, you never felt BAD for him, he just annoyed you and made you as the viewer wish he had been beaten as a pulp and at least pretend to be humble in some vague way.

I did not enjoy this movie at ALL. >(

Han’s Movie Thoughts: Thor

June 3, 2011

I enjoyed it.

It was entertaining and I’m glad I went. I loved the inside jokes referencing the Iron Man movies, I thought the costumes were REALLY cool, and I LOVED the development of the other planets.

I’m a huge romance dweeb, so I do like when movies have a romantic side plot. But this one was really forced. So she fell in love with him because he was majorly cut and had a nice smile? That’s….super shallow. 😐 C’mon, she’s supposed to be some scientific genius girl, and you make her fall in love with him in the single evening scene of him telling her unbelievable stories about space. Mmmmkay…..

Otherwise, I at least enjoyed the explosions and how the movie showed both on earth and on Asgard. The opening was REALLY weird though….I think it probably would have worked better WITHOUT the strange flashback. There was too much plot in between flashing back and forward, so IMO it didn’t work. I am curious to see the Director’s Cut of this movie. I have a feeling it may be better.

DC Is Rebooting!

June 1, 2011

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/DC-Universe-Reboot-Announcement-110531.html

The reboot is starting up around the end of Aug/beginning of Sept.  That is going to be around Baltimore Comic Con and New York Comic Con won’t be too far behind it.

My feelings on this are so torn.  I’m half laughing because I can’t believe they are really doing a reboot.  And I’m half curious because I want to see what they are going to do.

Cyborg looks to be joining the Justice League as part of the team.  I’m kinda excited for that.  Maybe give more to Cyborg’s character.  Reading this article I shared above I feel a little better about them revamping.  It seems they are going to try for more character-driven stories which I felt DC’s titles lacked alot of times.  Marvel had no problem giving us character-driven stories as opposed to event-driven which seems to dominate DC Universe more.  And hopefully they can lighten up on the pointless angst.  Because I did not appreciate what happened to Ice in Generation Lost.  Let’s hope everything will be revamped for the better!

The Flash: Rebirth

May 31, 2011

Finally, after being all over Hal Jordan and the rest of the GL crew, DC has decided to shift focus on another character, The Flash. With the new Flashpoint series DC is currently pushing (and I’m currently not buying until a graphic novel comes out), I picked up the newish graphic novel, The Flash: Rebirth. Plus, it was $5 for a hardcover at a convention, so really how could I say no.

Barry Allen is back, from outer space. I’m sure Wally West was thinking maybe he should have changed that stupid lock, or maybe made him leave his key, but Barry is back! And there’s going to be various parades welcoming The Flash home. However all is not right in the world; Two scientists are killed, some other bad crap happens, and any one else who can run fast as hell is turning into dust when Barry touches them. As it would turn out, Professor Thawne, who is an evil, yellow Flash, is trying to destroy Barry and his whole world, by going back in time and killing or changing everything he loves. So, it’s up to Barry and the rest of the Flash family to stop Thawne in order to save the world.

I found the story to be a little confusing. A lot is happening in here; Barry is the main focus, but that doesn’t mean the other guys who also call themselves The Flash don’t get attention either. And that’s where I think this series has its biggest flaw; There is too much going on all at once. Something is wrong with Irey; Something is wrong with Jay; Something is wrong with everyone else who can run fast as hell, and somehow, it is all connected to Barry Allen. The core concept is clear as day; Barry Allen is brought back to life, and he has to prove himself worthy of being back by defeating Thawne. Everything else added in here just seems like extra garbage; which is a shame, because I genuinely like Barry Allen and Wally West.

Still, if you stumble on this book in a $5 bin, it’s worth a read. Some parts of it are amazing, but some of it will leave you thinking ‘What the dick is that.’

It looks great the more I see clips of the movie 🙂

So far I’m hearing good things from people that seen an early screening of the movie.

Supergirl: Candor

May 30, 2011

Supergirl is the one female hero I know very little about. Why? Well, without the words ‘Bat’ or ‘Sailor’ in front of Supergirl, I never gave much of a damn. However, something struck me when I saw this book. The cover? No. The stories? Nope. The price: I found it at a con for $5, and that’s a good price. I mean, for $5 can you go wrong? Yes, but only if you’re buying an Aquaman comic. If you’re paying $5 for anything Aquaman*, you are over paying by about 10000000%.

This is a good collection of stories following various events in the not so normal life of Supergirl. My only other exposure to her lies within that one issue of Batgirl, where she was thrown in to help Batgirl fight vampires. The three part story in this graphic novel, also called Candor, is probably the best stuff in here. Candor is collected from Supergirl #7, 8 and 9, and follow her and Powergirl trying to overthrow a crazy power hungry Superman who is dominating a planet of aliens. I don’t know how Superman got there, so it was slightly confusing. I guess because I don’t follow any of the Super people I would be lost. So aside from being a good collection, without some kind of foundation for Supergirl or whatever the fuck is happening in this book, you’ll be lost. I was lost, but I still got through it with my comic book super hero know-how.

Ron Adrian did the best of the art, with Candor Part 3, but honestly every artist that’s in here did a fantastic job. I can say that for the cover price of $14.99, this book is not worth it to a new Supergirl fan. However, if you find it for $5 like I did, pick it up. You can always Google this stuff to catch up.

Iceman & Angel One Shot

May 18, 2011

I’m a big enough person to admit that I don’t read Marvel that much. I grew up as a DC and Archie fan, but I’ve always respected Marvel. Of course the only time I actually read Marvel, is when they release a one shot, as is the case with this Iceman and Angel one shot. I don’t know much about the X-Men. These one shots are a great way to introduce myself and hopefully new readers to various X-Men and women, which is what this comic did perfectly.

Neither character got a back story, but a back story would honestly bog down the plot. The two are on vacation, but they’re in New York City instead of a real spring break place. While they are roaming around like “little old ladies”, a giant monster which looks like Thing shows up, causing havoc in its path. The two of them naturally go after it, but only ro distract it until the Avengers, Fantastic Four, or even the military show up.

Which they never do. The Avengers are being held captive in space, the Fantastic Four are also being held captive, and the military is too busy cornering Namor, who in an honest to goodness laugh out loud moment quips “For the last time, I can’t “surrender”! This isn’t an invasion of your surface world! I just wanted a bagel! We don’t have them down there!” So it’s up to the two boys to get past their differences, and to fight this monster.

Only the monster isn’t there to fight. He’s there to locate his also Thing look-a-like son, who attends college on Earth.

This is one of the few one shots aside from Lady Deadpool where you will laugh at something on almost every other page. Brian Clevinger is a witty writer, and should probably get a raise. Artist Joan Doe adds to the comic relief with perfect facial expressions, and the monsters are really adorable, for well, being monsters. This is a perfect example of an easy read without being bogged down by having to buy 25 issues just to get to the end. This is much akin to the comics of yesteryear, where a storyline was done in either one or two issues. Of course, then we would be missing out on some *killer* story arcs, such as Blackest Night, but would we honestly know any better?

That being said, bravo to Clevinger and Doe! This was a great addition to my comic collection.

I’m in a book about Archie!

May 12, 2011

Ok, not me per say, but some of the comics you see in this book are from my collection. Plus, my name is in the ‘Thank you’ section, in a book about Archie. That’s a natural high that I’m sure I won’t be able to duplicate for a while.

Look how damn happy I am.

The book is beautiful. Clocking in at over 200+ pages, there is a little bit of everything covering the long life of Archie and his pals. It also gives a rare glimpse into a side of MLJ I was unaware of; the pin-up side! The introduction is also written really, really well, and full of love. You can’t help but smile when it finally gets to the part about the red-headed freckle face I’ve been a fan of for my whole life. You can pick it up at any local comic shop, or just have them order you one! It will be the best $50 you’ll spend this year. I PROMISE.
