…Are they FLYING?!

February 2, 2011

One of the many things I don’t like to tell people is that I *adore* anime stage plays…or something. The best one(s) I’ve seen have all been related to Sailor Moon, probably because that’s the only anime I really care about. If you’ve never heard of Sailor Moon, let me break it down for you in a super easy manner:

This chick named Usagi is the re-incarnation of Princess Serenity from the Moon. Back in the day her kingdom was destroyed, and her mother sent her and everyone else to Earth to live a peaceful, non royal life. One day Usagi is going to school when she see’s some asshole kids fucking with a cat. She saves the cat, is freaked out, and is also late for school. Later that night stalker cat finds Usagi in her room, and informs her that she is Sailor Moon. (This is also how Codename Sailor V started out, way to recycle shit, Naoko Takeuchi.) Usagi shouts ‘Moon Prism Power, Make Up!’ turns into Sailor Moon, and goes off to fight evil by moonlight.

This spanned 5 seasons, 18 graphic novels, 3 movies, several specials, a live action show (…) and several Sera Myu shows. It’s worth checking out as it is the only anime I will acknowledge.

Anyhow. The musicals. I can’t really tell you what goes on in them since they’re all different, but they all have a core concept: Some shit goes down, they transform, and then save the world. They also have some sweet music, but you know…it’s Sailor Moon on stage. Much in the same that Disney on Ice is really stupid but kind of entertaining, so are these clips:

Tid bits.

-Johnny Storm died.  However, in normal modern comic fashion, he will be back within a few issues. That being said, now would be a great time to re-introduce the original Human Torch to the current Marvel line.

-Prices have been slashed on almost all comics. D.C. has pledged no comic over $2.99…yea we’ll see.

-It’s snowing like a mofo outside so I’m drinking red wine out of a Batman glass:

Catwoman!

January 19, 2011

Remember when I said Catwoman would be in the next movie, and roughly 5 of you said I was wrong? Guess what, I wasn’t:

“BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be staring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.”

While the idea of Bane sends chills down my spine thanks to the terrible “Batman and Robin”, I have faith that Nolan will make this movie work, regardless of how dumb the villain may be.

The Green Hornet

January 16, 2011

Months back at New York Comic Con, I saw TGH trailer for the first time. I didn’t know what to make of it. Especially in 3D, something I’m not a fan of unless it comes after ‘TRON: LEGACY. IN…’ However, as the months went by my anticipation for the movie grew.

Today I went and saw TGH in the early afternoon. After paying $6 for my regular 2D movie I took a seat in the theater. The movie started. Oh boy. We start off with an 8-year-old Britt Ried is escorted into his father’s office at a newspaper company, where his father scolds him for getting into another fight (which we later learn, was him coming to the rescue of a girl in his class). Twenty some years later, we see Britt “grown up” and throwing a pretty sick party, with broken flat screens and girls in tight clothing. After being scolded by his father, again, his father dies of a bee sting. After the funeral ceremony for him, a statue is revealed in his honor. At some point Kato comes in, does some bad ass stuff with coffee, and 10 minutes later the two are cutting off the head of the statue.

I would love to go and Wikipedia the plot for you guys, but it needs to be said that the first 30 minutes of this movie are pretty boring, and easy to forget. They build the who, where, what, and why, without giving you much else. Of course this could make the average movie goer angry, but I’m rather charmed by it. The bullshit was moved out fairly quickly, and is paced like a real graphic novel. We’ve seen this before with the likes of ‘Batman and Robin’, but here it actually works. No dragging things out ala ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Batman Begins’. It gets to the point quickly. To that, I applaud Seth Rogan.

The only thing that was pretty un-cool, is that Seth Rogan’s Green Hornet is kind of like a Mary Sue fan fic on the big screen. Seth basically plays himself (not always a bad thing) and lives out his fantasy of being a superhero, in his case, Green Hornet. While my knowledge of Green Hornet is limited to the few GA books and the show with Bruce Lee, I’d like to think I know enough to know that this is not the Green Hornet I’m familiar with. That being said, he was enjoyable to watch, as his enthusiasm for the characters was very evident.

The same can’t be said for some of the other cast members. Christoph Waltz plays a very forgettable and uncharismatic Chudnofsky, who I guess was supposed to be Russian. Waltz blew me away as Hans Landa, but he literally brought nothing to the table in this movie. He didn’t even sound Russian, he sounded like himself reading lines off a piece of paper and putting little to no emotion behind them. He was pretty much useless. Cameron Diaz was good, but aside from being a love interest offered little else until the very end of the movie. Her character was wasted, and could have had much more potential (and conflict)!

That being said, Jay Chou stole the show. He blew me away as Kato, and he is in no way shape or form a rip off of Bruce Lee. He is Kato. He made it his own, and I enjoyed watching him on the screen. Adorable, kick ass, and a great counterpart. I would very much so enjoy a Kato movie, as he could easily carry it by himself. Oh, and Black Beauty was great and amazing. There were some cute nods to the original show (as well as Bruce Lee), but if you blink you will miss them.

Overall this is an enjoyable movie. It was a great way to set up a franchise, and I hope there is another movie. But I would wait until it comes out on DVD, or at a second run theater (or $2 theater, whatever).

What do you look for in a character?

January 9, 2011

Tonight while discussing ‘The Walking Dead’ at a girls only comic club I attend, I thought to myself, what is it that I look for in a character? A strong independent streak, is the one thing that stood out. Someone who marches to the beat of their own drum.

Jughead Jones, for example, has been a mainstay in my heart since I was 6. By the time I was around, Jughead wasn’t so much a woman-hater as he just didn’t care. Watching Archie and Reggie convinced him dating was more trouble than it’s worth, and in highschool, that is the truth. Plus he is a nerd, but is still just one of the gang. That funny crown? He wouldn’t be Jughead without it.

Batman is also another character who is a loner (ignore Robin). While every now and again he does need the help and socialization from the JL, he is just his own person. I admire that. Batgirl is also another person in the Batfamily who I greatly admire. Stephanie Brown especially, as we rarely see her mingle with Batman and Robin while out in Batgirl. Simply put, like Batman, she doesn’t really need the help of too many other people (except Oracle, who is awesome).

So what about you, dear readers?

The good, and the bad, of 2010.

January 3, 2011

Oh my God. New Years Eve is here, and with that, comes a new year! Like you already didn’t know! Ok, let’s get on with the show:

The Good:

-Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D. And fuck you if you didn’t like it.
-Kevin Keller, the gay guy in the Archie universe. It’s about time Archie got more color in there!
-Kick Ass was fucking amazing. I’ve never had so much fun in a theater before. EVER.
-Batman came back! Yaaaay!
-The Brightest Day spin-offs. Flash! Birds of Prey! Yes I’m so happy!!

The Bad:

-Iron Man 2: While the movie did have it’s highlights, over all I was let down by the sequal which seemed to have been rushed out.
-What seems like a million Batman titles: No human being who still reads modern comics should be subjected to this crap. And it’s not just Batman; Deadpool, for example, also has a million titles. It’s expensive, the stories seem to be hot or miss (usually miss), and again, expensive.
-Jonah Hex: I almost forgot this movie came out this year. That’s how bad it was.
-The Transformers 3 teaser: While I like it, even I can honestly say that it looks terrible and jeebus they are on the fucking moon.
-The Brightest Day main title:  Such a pain in the ass to read every two weeks. While some of it was good, the majority of it made me want to rip my eyes and lungs out and beat them against a wall. This came out waaaaay too soon. Should have been held off for a little while longer.

*I wrote this a week ago, while still in 2010, but never posted it. My bad.

Audiences should suspend disbelief again

December 28, 2010

I know I promised my thoughts on J. Michael Strazynski, but I’m actually more interested in talking about how we suspend disbelief for movies and comics and shows.  I think alot of people have gone into watching and reading something and expecting it to make perfect sense and should fit into our reality.  I find I can enjoy things alot more if I suspend my disbelief for the time being.  We look at these movies and shows, and read books as an escape from our reality.

This is my short blurb, so I’ll get off my soapbox.

Adding to Lauren’s Tron: Legacy post, I completely agree with her.  Also want to say that any of the people that are complaining about Tron: Legacy, you should go back and watch the first one.  It wasn’t perfect either.  But it received alot of praise cause of the special effects.  I enjoyed both movies though.  Wish the first movie had a more in-depth story.  The sequel was a good follow-up to that story.  Making a sequel to a story that didn’t have much depth in the beginning is not going to appeal to new audiences.  I think if you enjoyed the first Tron, you will enjoy the second.

Someone in the Archie-verse dies.

December 23, 2010

Have you heard the news? Much like the title says, one of Riverdale’s most enduring characters is actually going to die, in ‘Life With Archie’ #6. That character being Ms. Grundy, the teacher who has been around since the dawn of time itself (or what seems like). Ms. Grundy, as the story will explain, had cancer, and died. While I would lament and go on about how sad I am, I am very much so under the impression this will not effect the regular titles at all. After all, Life With Archie is about what happens after Archie marries Betty/Veronica. And as we all know, every other title is about the gang in high school.

I am very proud of the direction Archie has taken. From getting married, having kids, having a new gay student, and finally being put in adult situations. However, I’m a little put off with killing a character. Yes yes, death is a part of life and Archie should not ignore it, but I feel like some of my childhood is being punched in the face*. Plus, with all of the mass media publicity the comic has been getting, it just doesn’t seem “special”. Maybe Grundy should have died 3 years from now, and not after an amazing year of gay kids, weddings, and having Obama and Palin in a comic. It seems unfair to Ms. Grundy. (Or on the flip side, this is one helluva way to end a great year.)

-Lauren

*I hate being punched anywhere, especially in the face.
