Minorities actors casted in white roles (comic book)

May 4, 2013

I’m a member of a comic book forum and they were talking about how minorities are being cast in roles that were originally white characters.

For example Idris Elba played Heimdall in Thor (Heimdall is white in the comic books)

Anyway, there’s this rumor that Fox may cast a African-American to play Johnny Storm in their Fantastic Four reboot.

This news got a lot of comic book fans upset because they see it as trying to get minorities to see it or Fox not being faithful to the source material.

What’s my take on this subject?
Well,It really depends on the character they’re casting.

Characters like Superman,Batman,Wolverine,Captain America,Wonder Woman, and others I can’t see being played by minorities actors mainly because they’re so iconic that it would upset both fans and non-fans.

But if it’s like a 2nd tier or supporting characters I could see it happen.

Jamie Foxx is playing Electro in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel.
Lawrence Fishburne is playing Perry White in Man of Steel.
Kerry Washington played Alicia Masters in Fox’s Fantastic Four movies.

So,it can work but it really depends on the character.

For me,All I want is an actor that can really play the part well (doesn’t matter what their skin color is)
Could an African-American actor play Johnny Storm?
Don’t know,but it’s a subject worth talking about.

Let me hear what you think about this subject.

Batman Push-ups

Batman Push-ups

In real life I work at a gym. I also work out with an awesome trainer named Katie who has managed to incorporate superheroes into my workout, which has led me to this:

Over the next few months I plan to expand the Girls With Comics YouTube channel with superhero workouts everyone can do at home!

So dear readers, is there anything you’d like to see? Anything you’d like to suggest?

Archie Makeup

Archie Makeup

This has been my obsession for the past month. I somehow managed to buy the entire collection. It took a ton of time and a ton of money. But if you like Archie and you like makeup, this is a win win. The Veronica blush (as shown) is literally the best blush I’ve ever used. The collection is available through MAC, although many stores are sold out you can still score it online through eBay.

Tomb Raider game review

March 31, 2013

I’ve been playing the Tomb Raider game for my PS3.
Here’s my review:
The games starts out with Lara Croft and the Endurance crew in a storm that leaves them stranded on a uncharted island.
They soon find out they’re not alone, and it’s up to Lara Croft to save the day.

I have to admit I was never a fan of the games (I only played 1 TR game for the PS1 and didn’t like it)
So,I was curious about this reboot by Square Enix (I’m a fan of their Final Fantasy games)

To my surprise,I really enjoy playing the game.
While I said I didn’t like the games,I always like Lara Croft.
This is pretty much a origin story for Ms.Croft,We see how she became a badass,gun-toting tomb raider (not by choice, but just to survive)
They didn’t change her appearance all that much (which is nice)
I like this version of Lara Croft than past versions.

One thing I didn’t like about the TR games was that controls were just god awful.
They fixed that problem, her moves feel more natural.
The camera angles were fixed here as well (I never had a single issue with the camera)

Weapons in the game are great too.
The bow & arrow is by far the best weapon in the game (you’re going to use that more than any other weapon)

The map is huge (you’re going to wind up exploring to find relics, gps, challenges, and, documents)

The only downside to the game is the multiplayer (it feels like an afterthought)

Overall this is the first Tomb Raider game I enjoy playing.
If you’re new to the franchise, this is a good starting point.

4 out of 5 for me.

My Boyfriend Was an Anime Con Virgin: Katsucon 2013

February 17, 2013

Sort of. He was familiar with Otakon (or rather, with people watching). He ad been to a few conventions before for other genres. In fact we had met at a horror convention late September. I did take him to Tigercon, a local anime convention at a college around here.It probably wasn’t the best con to take him too; the average con goer was maybe 17. Him and I are both in our late twenties.

So this past weekend we went to Katsucon! Thankfully Katsucon has a much more age diverse crowd. Plus it has some of the best cosplay you’ll ever see. He had originally wanted to cosplay as Naked Snake, and I went as Sailor V. His plans fell through, but in a way that may have worked out. If you’ve ever had a con virgin with you, you know that it’s impossible to walk a straight line without them stopping to look at something every other minute. It might seem annoying, but it was really endearing. It reminded me of my first conventions as a 14 year old. Everything was shiny and new. Watching him go through that helped me capture some bits of nostalgia as well.

We spent a good three hours in the dealers room painstakingly combing through every booth to see who had the best deals on what. We sat in the hallways and people watched. He excitedly pointed at things and asked questions. I think his new favorite anime may be Chi’s Sweet Home. We didn’t attend panels, we didn’t watch anime. We bought stuff, we people watched, and we had fun with our friends.

Yes, there was another convention in the hotel. No, we did not have any bad interactions with them. While I did see one Tweet from one bad apple of the BBYO, that was it. Everyone else gawked accordingly (but let’s be real. If you’re a cosplayer you should be used to that) but no one bothered each other. Of course that might not be the case for other con attendees.

The Gaylord is as always a great hotel, but impossible to navigate. One young lady at the check in counter had no idea where a staircase (to get to higher levels) was. That was funny to us, but ultimately she needs to know. What if there’s a fire inside of the hotel?

Also I only paid $8 for the day to park at the garage across he street. That’s about on par with what I pay to park at my garage for Otakon.

All in all Katsu was fantastic. If you’ve never been, or haven’t been in a while, I urge you to go!

Pictures I took can be found here. Enjoy! 🙂

J.J.Abrams to direct Star Wars:Episode VII?

January 24, 2013

Reports are that Lucasfilms has hired J.J.Abrams to direct Star Wars:Episode VII.
If this is true,I’m both excited and sadden.

Excited because I loved what he did with Star Trek, and I hope he’ll give the Star Wars franchise a much needed boost.
Sadden because he may not return to direct a third Star Trek film 😦

But that’s if the rumors are true.

We’ll see what happens with this news.

Savage Wolverine #1

January 17, 2013

For years I’ve flirted with the possible idea of maybe reading a Marvel series. Growing up I’ve always been a DC. But with the new Marvel Now line I have the chance to jump into a new series without missing a beat. This past Wednesday Savage Wolverine came out. Cards, Comics and Collectibles, located in Reisterstown Maryland, had a release party for the comic with Frank Cho on hand. I figured this would be a good series to start with. After all, Frank Cho is a great writer and artist, and I couldn’t pass up the chance to get him to sign a comic for me.

The series opens with a S.H.I.E.L.D mission underway. Agent McSwiggin and his crew (which includes agents we’ll never know as well as the lovely Shanna the She Devil) are off to explore the Forbidden Island. Things don’t exactly go the way they planned and the ship crashes on the island. Eight months later Wolverine also crashes on the island mysteriously. He wakes up to a dinosaur attacking him, which ultimately leads him to a group of Neanderthals carrying a nearly dead Agent McSwiggin. In his last breath he tells Wolverine where his ship has crashed, and that’s when Wolverine and Shanna cross paths.

The first issue is a great build up to what I hope turns out to be a great comic run. Frank Chowrites both Shanna and Wolverine with such care that it’s easy for a non Marvel fan to become fans of these two. The art is also top notch, something I’ve come to expect from Mr. Cho over the years. For $3.99 I feel you’ll be getting your money’s worth, regardless if you’re a Marvel or a DC…or if you’ve never read a comic at all!

Disney buys Lucasfilms

October 31, 2012

As you all know that Disney bought Lucasfilms for $4 billion on Tuesday.
I was surprised by this news as everyone else was.

I think in the long run this will benefit both parties.
I want to see different filmmakers take on the Star Wars franchise.

I love what Disney is doing with the Marvel films, and I’m very optimistic of what they’ll do with the Star Wars brand.
As long as Lucas isn’t involved in writing or directing the films,It will survive.

I don’t know what will happen to the Star Wars comic books from Dark Horse Comics.
My guess is that once their contract expires,it would go to Marvel Comics.

If there’s one franchise that needs a “reboot” it’s Star Wars

Also,I want Joss Whedon for a Star Wars trilogy 🙂

Dredd movie review

September 21, 2012

Here’s my review of Dredd.
I can safely say that Dredd is the movie that Judge Dredd fans like myself have been waiting for.

Karl Urban is awesome as Dredd.
He makes Batman look like Barney the Purple Dinosaur (Sorry Lauren)
Some may complain of Dredd not having any character development(but he doesn’t need one)
He also doesn’t need a origin story either (That’s not his style)

I really liked Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson.
She really had good character development as the movie went on.

I love the chemistry between Dredd & Anderson.
The one-liners were clever & it doesn’t sound cheap.

MaMa was a evil villain, but this was the Judge Dredd show.

This movie is not for the weak of heart or stomach.
The violence in the movie is pretty intense, but they’re great.

The Slo-Mo scenes were great & surreal(They even look great in 3D)

I do recommend seeing it in 3D.

The only thing I didn’t like was the used swear words f*** & s***
I really liked the future swear words in the comic books.

The movie isn’t too long or too short.

They’re some easter eggs in the film if you look closely.

Overall,I give it 4 out of 5.

Baltimore Comic Con 2012

September 9, 2012

The convention started off kind of rough. I was dropped off Friday afternoon to help with set up, and while there Pat’s car had been broken into. This in turn caused him to feel like crap, and therefore he didn’t join me this weekend. So I apologize for the lack of quality pictures. However because of this I wound up staying late on Friday, which gave me time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I even got to catch the first part of the Friday night Stan Lee event, but I left shortly before he arrived. Hearing about the failed “re-launch” oh Atlas many years back. Most of the comics failed after three issues since they switched writers so quickly in.

Saturday I rolled down to the convention with a friend. I promptly got to work, running food to volunteers and guests. This was a great way to meet artists at the con, and a chance to really see how conventions work. Baltimore Comic Con has in the past few years exploded with popularity. Up until a scant few years ago, the costume contest was held behind a curtain on the main floor. Last year we saw the real boom with this convention, due in part to Stan Lee being a guest. Baltimore Comic Con is also one of the few shows that is still really about comic books. You won’t see washed up wrestlers, reality starlets, and other such silly things here. The people who do run the show really put their all into it. The few hours I helped exhausted me (as did my cold). The lines were in control, everything seemed to move smoothly. Heck, I even met Stan Lee. I also got to make silly faces at Han.

Comic wise I didn’t really check anything else. Everything seemed so artist heavy this year that comics were a second thought. I picked up a ton of new art. I met some fantastic new artists, and harassed a few of my favorites. Everyone involved in this con really does put their heart into it and I love every minute of it. If you have yet to visit Baltimore Comic Con, I urge you to visit next year.

Stan Lee and friends.
