Batgirl has a new artist.

March 22, 2010

While the story is still good, and the cross over with Red Robin is fun, I do not like this new artist. Batgirl’s lips piss me off to high heaven.

Jughead has had his 200th comic! While this boggles my mind since technically Jughead has had his own comic since 1949, what do I know. The variant cover is cool, but the regular Dan Parent cover kicks just as much ass!

I still think Avatar sucked.

Justice League: Cry For Justice ended. It was a good ending, and it was nice to see Green Arrow do his thing. I’m looking forward to reading the new Flash series.

Chris Evans as Captain America makes me happy because he’s hot. Beyond that I don’t give a damn.

Persepolis

March 21, 2010

What can I say that has not already been said. This autobiography of Marjane Satrapi’s young life in Iran is surprisingly warm and brilliant. The conflict in the novel, stemming from her being a girl in Iran, still hits close to home. There are tons of similarities between herself and any other child; She has dreams. She wants to listen to rock and roll but society doesn’t allow it. Growing up I wanted to listen to some pretty shitty music, and my parents were against it. Her family has dreams of her having a brighter, happier future in Iran, a dream that is too this day not yet realized.

What really hit home was her desire to just be a normal child. She buys bootleg heavy metal albums. She wears a denim jacket. She  does all of the things a normal kid would do in a normal rebellious situation, however unlike you and I, she could have been arrested or killed for being so out spoken. When she is sent to Austria to go to school, she is treated unfairly due to her heritage. Faced with discrimination and fake friends, she points out more than once they all take their freedom for granted. And we all do. I can not imagine being arrested simply because I wore a denim jacket.

The book is amazing. I have yet to see the movie, but I will soon. If you have not read this novel (and really, why haven’t you) pick it up today. Or tomorrow. Just get it by the end of the week. You will not be sorry.

And now, some WW2 cartoons.

March 20, 2010

Saturday morning should always be about cartoons.

While WB will not put this cartoon into any of it’s official releases anymore, the internet proves that you can’t hide everything.

Avatar in 3-D

March 15, 2010

So I finally saw Avatar on March 14. Yea, I waited that long. Everyone told me how epic and amazing it was. Before I get to what I thought, let me tell you about what I went through to see this movie.

We drove way past the legal speed limit to get to a place 45 minutes away for a movie that was going to start in 30. We made it in record time. We paid for the tickets, got good seats, and as soon at the fucking trailers start, the building has to be evacuated. Some dumb kid pulled the fire alarm in the theater. The theater is inside of a mall, so a few thousand people spilled out into the mall. It was a cluster fuck, to say the least. After 40 minutes we went back in, and the movie started. We didn’t have sound for 2 minutes. I’m sure I missed a whole helluva lot. …

The 3-D effects were cool. It took me some time to get used to it, but I enjoyed it. However the story line sucked. Yes, it’s a great anti-war message or love your planet message or Americans want to take over everything message. The story line was just lacking. The acting, was also lacking. The movie as a whole was too much. I felt like I was in the theater for 10 hours. The Dark Knight was long, but it didn’t feel like it. This movie dragged, frankly there was too much movie. Some scenes could have been all together dropped. If I could remember what they were I would list them, but I was seriously bored through the film. I didn’t feel for any of the characters. They just seemed so flat to me.

The only good thing I have to say from the whole thing, was that we got two free passes for another movie. I’m down with that.

Dan Parent is awesome.

March 10, 2010

Growing up I developed a deep love and adoration for Archie comics. When I was in the hospital (rather frequently), Archie and his friends always made me feel better. I adore the work of Dan Parent, Rex W. Lindsay and Bill Woggon and wanted to draw just like them. I would spend hours with a sketch book and pencils trying to copy their styles. The character I could only really draw well was Jughead, but he is my favorite so you know.

Dan Parent is easily my favorite Archie artist. I love the way he makes the characters look extra cartoony and just fun. His style is unique, its fluid, and it’s just easy on the eyes. I have a steady collection of OA by him, and I’m always more than happy to pay for them, because he really is one heckuva good artist. His work outside of Archie is pretty awesome and funny too! And, he kind of looks like David Tennant. You simply can not hate someone who kind of  looks like the Doctor. And if you do, you have no soul.

Please, ask for a photo.

March 9, 2010

Back in the day when I would cosplay at a con, I would notice other convention goers taking pictures of myself, or other cosplayers, from far away. Usually these pictures are of cosplayers mid-sentance, mid-hamburger-bite, whatever. Nothing looks more awkward than a Sailor Moon cosplayers sitting down, minding her own business and eating some food, when someone randomly gets a shot of her. I understand candid shots, but those are an art form that very few convention going photographers know how to pull off. Random dude with a point and shoot, you are not one of them.

While an argument can be made that if you are in costume, naturally you want people to take your picture. Of course, why else would I dress like this? But when I’m eating, DO NOT TAKE MY FUCKING PICTURE. I’ll take a photo of you on the crapper and see how much you like it, you asshat. The people who take pictures from a distance are also annoying. You’re at a con with several thousand other people. I’m willing to bet your world wont end if you ask a cosplayer for a real photo. I’m also willing to bet the cosplayer will not bite off your head! Hell, he or she may even be friendly!

Bottom line is, you look creepy when you take a photo from a distance. Is there something wrong that you can’t ask? If you are that shy, why are you at a con with several thousand other people. That seems very counter productive.

No really, ask for a picture.
