Era of the geek?

February 28, 2011

Let’s be real; For the past few years, it seems that being a geek is the new prep. Big companies are releasing comic themed products (such as Wonder Woman MAC makeup) and key comic books has been breaking records (Detective 27 and Action 1 have sold for over $1 million, respectively). Comic book movies are being hailed as wonderful and nothing short of amazing (Dark Knight), and nerd themed shows are just as popular as uh, well, I don’t know. I don’t watch much television. I assume that Big Bang Theory is just as popular (I hope more so but I would be lying to myself) then Jersey Shore.

So yesterday I went to see ‘Unknown’ in theaters. The movie was fine, but didn’t exactly wet my whistle for awesome sauce movies. However, three trailers in a row were all comic book related: Green Lantern, followed by Thor, followed by X-Men First Class. While the person with me was not excited for these movies at all, I was a giddy little school girl just wanting to run around the theater screaming “IT’S THE AGE OF THE COMIC NERD”, but I didn’t because that would be really stupid. But it’s true! Every summer my soul is lavished with big budget comic book movies. Most of them are good, but some of them are fucking horrible, and no amount of “You should be grateful there’s even a movie!” will not calm my nerves.

In closing, viva la nerd! I’ll ride this trend out and keep it alive well after its dead, let’s just hope all of you band wagoners stay on board.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 review

February 24, 2011

I’ve been waiting for 10 years for this game, and now I have been playing this game for weeks.

Here’s my game review:

The pros:

Game play and controls are a improvement from MvC 2

You can do air combos easily now(which is great for newbies 🙂 )

There are 4 offline modes:

  • Arcade
  • Verses
  • Training
  • Mission

Mission mode is new to this game.Mission mode is you have to perform specific combos on all your fighters.

I find Mission mode to be pretty good,it helps players to perfrom the harder combo moves.

The fighters in MvC 3 are great.

Along with returning fighters like Wolverine,Captain America,Ryu,and Chin-Li,we also get a nice addtions to the series.

My favorite new fighters are:

  • Deadpool
  • Dante
  • Trish
  • Wesker
  • X-23

X-23 is the quickest fighter in the game,so good chance that newbies will use her online.

Online mode is where the meat & potatoes of the game is.

You will be playing online for a LONG time (which is a good thing 🙂 )

Now for the Con-

There’s no online survival or time trial modes 😦

The number of fighters in the game is down from MvC2

Fighters from past games like Vemon,Mega Man,Strider,Captain Commando,Ken are absent 😦 😦

Hopefully they can fix that with DLC

Overall this game is a must have for fans of the series or fighting games in general.

I give it 4 out of 5 🙂

I would suggest you get a fighting stick to perfrom combos.

Superhero deaths:Good storytelling or just a gimmick?

February 17, 2011

As you may all know that the Human Torch is dead in FF #587.so this got me wondering, is the death of a beloved character a way to make an interesting story or is it just a gimmick to make money? To me I think it’s just a way to get people to spend money on a struggling series. If they wanted to make a good story they should have killed the Invisible Woman then I would have been interested in the series b/c I’m a fan of the character and she’s the heart & soul of the team. When Marvel killed Captain America I was pissed, but at the same time I said to myself “Ok,but how long till they bring him back?” So what the hell is the point in killing a superhero if they are going to bring them back from the dead????  That’s why I didn’t really care about the death of  the Human Torch b/c they’ll just bring him back.Marvel did sell a lot of copies the book, but I didn’t give a crap.I want Marvel to just tell a good story and not use a death a character to sell a book.A good example of a good story selling a book is the current Green Lantern series by Geoff Johns (you have to read this series it’s awesome 😀 ) So,that’s what I have to say about this topic.I want to hear what you guys and gals have to say.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird no more.

February 17, 2011

If you were like me, who loved the Hawkeye & Mockingbird series and then come and find out that Marvel cancelled the series after a team-up with Black Widow, you are kinda pissed.

Today I was looking through the first couple pages of the Hawkeye mini-series they just came out with.  I’m not gonna spoil it but a new development seems to have happened and now I really wish the Hawkeye and Mockingbird series was continuing.

To say the least, I’m kinda mad about this.  I don’t know what reasons Marvel had for canceling the series, but I think it was a mistake.  I have no idea what the sales were for it (aside from going through the ‘testimonies’ they put on the cover which I always wonder where the hell they got those from) so I can only vouch for myself.  I bought every single issue.  Yeah it wasn’t many but I looked forward to every issue.  And I didn’t realize they had continued into another series with Black Widow until after the fact but I will be buying that too.  And buy the Hawkeye mini-series.

My feelings for this basically are if it isn’t Iron Man, Spiderman or X-men then it doesn’t get a bajillion series.  I just wanted one series of Hawkeye and Mockingbird.  My two favorite characters in the Marvel Universe.  But I can’t even get that.  But X-men has almost several titles, half of them I don’t like.  Marvel is slightly better then DC cause DC seems to rely heavily on Batman titles.  Or Green Lantern titles (Hey Geoff Johns, I’d really like your Flash series to get a new issue more then once every six months.  Back off of Green Lantern for a while plz).

Overall I am pissed at Marvel for this.  I’d really like my fav series back.

I don’t believe in bootlegging.

February 11, 2011

Yesterday, while hanging around at school, I got into a pretty lengthy conversation about bootlegging/downloading anime. To be short, I’m against it. To be long, here’s a rough idea of what we talked about:

Guy: Why does bootlegging bug you so much?

Me: Because it takes money out of people’s pockets. If you notice at the end of each episode you stream, there’s a long list of people who work on shows. By not buying the anime (in a legal fashion) you are taking money out of their pocket.

Guy: But then how can I watch new anime shows?

Me: Wait for it to be released here? There are thousands of titles that have been released in the U.S over the past 20 years. Or, learn Japanese and buy the DVD’s from Japan. That’s how I saw all of Sailor Moon… (albeit it was on Laser Disk.)

Guy: But I don’t want to watch older anime. It’s outdated and no one cares about it.

Me: Then you’re missing out on some killer, classic titles. I get that anime that is over 5 years old is somehow “ancient”, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad and should be forgotten. Anime fans need to celebrate the older stuff just as much as the newer stuff.

Guy: Anime is too expensive.

Me: Back in 1994 I could buy a Ranma 1/2 VHS for $30, and it only contained 2 episodes. I can now buy a Ranma DVD for $5* with 5 episodes on it.

Guy: That’s not fair to me then. China/Korea/Guy on the corner has it for sale, so I can buy it.

Me: China/Korea/Guy on the corner doesn’t have a gun to your head telling you to buy it. Let’s say you work at a Target. Everything is fine and dandy, you’re getting paid, but suddenly people decide they don’t want to pay for their stuff. They steal it instead. Is that right?

Guy: No, that’s illegal.

Me: Let’s say the stealing gets so bad, that Target has to close up, which puts you out a job. Is that right?

Guy: No, it’s not.

Me: THEN STOP PIRATING THIS CRAP. One day, animation studios are going to close up because of pirating. Then you won’t have any anime. And you know what? When that happens, I will track you down (yes I will) and personally blame you for the demise of anime. (This won’t actually happen, but it was really funny to me so I had to say it.)

We actually went back and forth on this for a while. I understand where he’s coming from (can’t find it in America so it’s ok to download/buy fansubs), but at the same time, it’s wrong. In this day and age there’s no reason to have to steal anymore. We are over saturated with anime and manga now. Go watch Tenchi Muyo or something, I promise you, it’s a great series.

*There’s a store called 5 Below that does sell Ranma (and other anime) for $5. On DVD. I shit you not.

Let us converse about the Superbowl.

February 6, 2011

In one word: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. In other words: EAT IT, STEELERS.

Anyhow, did anyone else geek out over the Transformers 3 and Cap trailer? Thor looks boring to me, but oh man, that Captain America trailer was all kinds of awesome. I only wish it had been longer. That movie looks far more exciting to me then Thor! And Transformers 3! More giant robots beating the piss out of each other? MOAR PLZ.

And last, anyone else catch Black Eyed Tron during the Halftime Show? It was entertaining, but in a ‘oh-god-make-it-stop’ kind of way.
