Big Apple Comic Con 2009

February 9, 2010

Well, where do I begin.

I originally wanted to go since Willem Dafoe was a guest. However, he cancelled, so I was thinking of skipping it. That was until they announced William Shatner as the guest of honor…And I needed to be there. My Dad is a die-hard Shatner fan, so I wanted to get him an autograph. So I convinced my boyfriend we needed to go, so we went with two of my friends.

We left Baltimore at around..7, got to New York around 9:30, got to the con by 11. On Saturday. We made excellent time if you ask me. However, it wasn’t good enough. Whomever coordinated the guests decided they would have their main goddamn guest attraction only sign from 10-11am, on Saturday, the busiest day of any convention. The peak times at a con are usually n the afternoon, so why not maximize people’s money (since you had to pay for an autograph) and get him then. No where on the website did they have times for when he was signing, and every ninny working the con didn’t know either. Not only was I profoundly disappointed, I was pissed off.

Big Apple, for me, has a history of being the worst con ever IMO. I went in 08 and hated it. It was held in what seemed like a crowded attic with no air flow. However, I decided to give it a second chance since I don’t hate Wizard World Cons. I should have followed my gut instinct and said fuck it from the get go, but what can you do? The con itself was mostly a media con, although there were some good dealers as well, but I rarely buy actual comics at comic cons. We left after a few hours, and enjoyed the rest of New York.

Would I go back? Maybe.

A look back on conventions of 2009: Baltimore Comic Con

January 20, 2010

Baltimore Comic Con. What can I say? It’s my favorite comic book con ever. Aside from that it’s in my backyard and kind of small compared to say, New York Comic Con, it’s still one of the best cons. Ever. I’m not the type of con goer who does panels or tries to meet guests. Instead I just like to wander around and find good books at good prices, and there was plenty of that to be had at Baltimore Comic Con 09. I’ll stop gushing now, so please enjoy the photo’s by Patty Boh, and myself!

Franco Aureliani is a really nice guy, and does sketches for $1. I love me some Tiny Titans!

 Our own Han and Supergirl!

Can’t wait for this years con!

A look back on conventions of 2009: Wizard World Philly

January 12, 2010

While many fans moan at the sound of ‘Wizard World’, including myself, I really like this con. It’s not too big, and not too small. Plus the media guests (wrestlers, reality TV stars) are kind of thrown into a small corner. Seriously that shit is depressing, especially with the wrestlers. I try to avoid eye contact with any of the non comic book guests. It’s for the better.

Anyhow. The pre-reg pick up on Saturday morning moved flawlessly. I got in and out within 10 minutes, and was on my merry little way! It wasn’t as flashy as NYCC, but it was still a good show. I’ve heard from dealers it wasn’t all that, but I’m not a dealer so I really can’t say. The crowd was good, the costumes were good, and I met some awesome people. This was actually the con I met Han at! It was magical and full of unicorns and rainbows. I know you’re super jealous. (I walked away from that colorful meeting, turned to my friend and said She’s SO CUTE! ~Han)

I’ll be returning to this con this year, and I’m looking forward to it! And now, pictures, from the talented Patty Boh:

I love this guy for reasons you should all be able to figure out.

A look back on conventions of 2009: New York Comic Con

January 4, 2010

With the 2010 convention season just months away, let’s have a look back on some of the cons of 2009. Included are New York Comic Con, Wizard World Philly, Baltimore Comic Con, and Big Apple Comic Con.
New York Comic Con:

New York Comic Con 2009 was my first year attending the con. While I had some issues with the con at first (such as my pre-reg never actually going through), it was still enjoyable. But it was also bitterly cold (which they couldn’t help) and crowded. The con center was also hosting a different convention that same weekend. The artists alley is always my favorite spot of the con, and also where I spend the most money. I got a sketch done by Dan Parent, one of the most talented Archie artist on their roster. Since the con was very over whelming for me (which is odd, since I was a veteran of Otakon) I didn’t do much else but walk around and take everything in. Perhaps in 2010 I’ll stay for the whole weekend, so I can really enjoy it!
