Otakon 2010

August 1, 2010

In case you missed it;

Funimation is releasing Hetalia season 2 soon. As well as Evangelion 2.2, with a possible theater release.

The con was evacuated Saturday afternoon because of the fire alarm.

Lots of regular American hero cosplay! Kind of wacky.

And look some pictures!

This is why collecting is hard.

July 30, 2010

(This is paraphrased, but you get the idea.)

Me: “Hello again. I have purchased from you before,and hopefully you will also consider this offer.  We think that this could possibly grade at a VG, so I hope you will consider offer this from us. Thanks.”

Dealer reply: “I consider such an attempt to influence my consideration of your offer to be not only ridiculous [as stated above YOU have NOT inspected the book], but a calculated and arrogant assertion that is completely without merit.”

IF YOU ARE POSTING ‘BUY IT NOW OR BEST OFFER’ THEN DO NOT BLOW UP. WE ARE NOT FINDING A CURE FOR CANCER. THIS IS THE COMIC BOOK BUSINESS. GET. OVER. IT.

Many of my friends ask me if it’s worth getting into collecting older comics. I always say no. The above is the reason why.

Dear people who work on the OSPG

July 26, 2010

I legit feel bad for the crap you sometimes go through from people. But such is the nature of any hobby.

That being said, the covers this year are God fucking ugly. I bought the Batman one because I like Batman, but really it’s an ugly cover and I’m sad that it is. Also next year, please leave out all Aquaman, no one likes him.  We all know Mera is the dominate one in that relationship, since she is the Head Bitch In Charge.

San Diego, did you go?

July 26, 2010

Quick survey for our readers out there. This is about the San Diego Comic Con;

1- How was the dealer’s room? Was there a big comic showing (like say, NYCC) or was it mostly big companies like Marvel and DC?

2- Did you buy any comics?

3- Did you spend your time going after Hollywood celebrities or comic book celebrities?

Sylvester Stallone throws hissy fit over Batman.

July 23, 2010

http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-sylvester-stallone-blames-batman.html

I’ll just copy and paste some key notes;

“”It was the first ‘Batman‘ movie,” Stallone told the Times, in reference to the 1989 movie adaptation starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. He went on to say, “The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcro your muscles on,” a clear dig at how the trim Keaton was encased in a sculpted Batsuit for the film. Stallone joked, “I wish I had thought of Velcro muscles myself… “I didn’t have to go to the gym for all those years.””

Translation: Man I wish I had tried out for the role of Batman. I’m pretty jealous because the comic book genre did survive, while my over the top action flicks couldn’t.

“”It was the beginning of a new era. The visual took over. The special effects became more important than the single person. That was the beginning of the end.””

Rambo, which he made merely a few years ago, was amazing and relied on little effects other than Stallone killing an entire Asian area singe-handedly. Don’t believe me? Go see it.

Stallone is a guest at this year’s comic con, by the way.

What gets me is that he brought his action star status on himself. Maybe if he wasn’t doing so many Rocky or Rambo movies, maybe he could have survived. Is the action movie dead? No. However ALL movies are more or less digitally enhanced now. There was no avoiding that, and maybe you shouldn’t complain about at all and be thankful that you have a movie coming out in a few weeks. The times, they are a changing. And you’re either on board or left in the past.

Oh and Judge Dredd was fucking terrible.

This week from my pull box…part 1

July 22, 2010

True Blood #1- I’ll sum it up for you; Dumber than the TV show, but just as enjoyable! They even make fun of the way Sookie says Bill.

Lady Deadpool one shot Funny, well drawn. Great one shot for a character I know little about. I’ll probably follow the Deadpool family.

Brightest Day #6- Finally, this series is going somewhere. Great back story for Mera too. Oh and fuck Aquaman.

I also got the new Overstreet. I can now know how much some of my books are worth! Oh, happy day.

So many choices

July 20, 2010

So after visiting my LCS tonight (and finding out I don’t have my wallet, yikes!), I took a good look around. We, as comic book fans, are over stimulated with choices. There are roughly 183637 different Batman series, and about 275141 different Spider-Man books. On top of that we have graphic novels and digest books and big reprints and all kinds of goodies. To be blunt, being a comic book fan will drain your wallet. Obviously the most cost-effective way of collecting books is by getting graphic novels. They take up less space and are easier to read. However I’m impatient and don’t really feel like buying graphic novels.

So what is a fan to do? I couldn’t tell you. I limit my modern buys to Batgirl, Gotham City Sirens, and Green Lantern. I will buy mini series as well as one shots if I’m so inclined. I check graphic novels out at the library (which is the best way to do it), and I only buy big commemorative books of platinum age comics, such as Bringing Up Father.

In nothing related to this post, I might go see Star Wars for free tomorrow night.

(And yes those numbers are accurate and true.)

Dear Europe, fuck you

many of you guys are getting Sailor Moon back.

Come on America, I need to see this series re-dubbed and shit!

Inception

July 17, 2010

As we all know, Christopher Nolan is possibly one of the best, if not best, directors in Hollywood. Seriously, anyone who can make a comic book hero one of the highest grossing movies of all time because it was *fucking insanely awesome* is clearly worthy of the ‘Best Director In Hollywood’ crown.

I saw Inception. I was apprehensive at first since I was worried it would remind me of Dark Knight, but I was wrong. Essentially this movie is about a man who enters the dream world in order to get information the dreamer has stored away in the depths of the mind. Leonardo DiCaprio plays our hero (for better or for worse) who is helping Ken Watanabe bring down a rival company, so he can have a monopoly over his industry. The unsuspecting rival, played by Cillian Murphy was done beautifully. His minor back story has more of an emotional punch to it than DiCaprio’s. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays as a sort of side-kick to DiCaprio, is the least explored characters, yet in my opinion the most interesting. I feel he should have been given more care as he is a great actor, but was used poorly. Ellen Page was there and frankly she could have been any other pretty face. She was a very lack luster character who was clearly a pivotal one.

The acting in the movie is very tight, as is the script. On your first viewing you will be hard pressed to find plot holes. The movie is smart, but don’t let that dazzle you. If you do, you will miss the underplayed humor through the movie. You’ll find yourself more involved with the rest of the cast than DiCaprio, but I doubt you’ll mind. This movie is amazing. Nolan has proven to us once again that he knows what he is doing, and we all thank him for that.
