Man of Steel movie review (spoiler warning)

June 15, 2013

I saw Man of Steel on Friday.
So,I wanted to write a review on it.
Is it the best Superman movie? Yes.
Did I enjoy it? Yes.
Is this the Superman movie we’ve been waiting for? Yes and then some.

The movie starts out with Lara-El giving birth to Kal-El.
We soon find out that he’s the first “natural” birth on Krypton in centuries (this twist interest me)
Apparently,Krypton were using a form of Eugenics to create their people (I wish they would of given more info on why they were doing it)
Anyway,Jor-El tells the leaders of Krypton that using the planet core for resources has made the planet unstable and have a week to live.
Then we see Zod and his goons killing everyone.
Jor-El escapes and returns to his home to send his son to Earth (their sun is still young,so Kal-El can survive on Earth)
Zod gets there, but it’s too late in stopping the rocket,he then fights and kills Jor-El.
He and his goons are send to the Phantom Zone for their crimes.

We then jump 33 years after on Earth to see Clark working on a number of jobs (crab fisherman is were he starts off)
I could go on for hours writing this review, but I want everyone to watch it themselves.

The casting is pretty much spot-on.
Cavill as Superman is awesome.
Amy Adams as Lois Lane is good (I’m one of the few that likes Ms.Lane as a redhead,I think it adds to fiery personally)
Michael Shannon as General Zod is pretty badass.
The 2 performances I thought were great are Costner & Crowe as Jonathan Kent & Jor-El.
They’ve helped Clark to understand his powers and how when the world see him,the world will change forever.
I was surprised how much screen time Jor-El got in this film (45 mins total)
Seeing Jonathan Kent die was heartbreaking, but he knew that Clark wasn’t ready to be seen yet (which is why he didn’t want him to save him)

The idea of Superman being a Christ-like figure makes sense to me.
Superman was created to give kids someone to look up to.
And when you look at Superman,he is someone we as humans can look up to for what he stands for good.

The one scene that will get fans upset is at the end were Superman has to kill Zod to save a human family.
We all know that Superman doesn’t kill, but in a situation that he was in what would have he done?
Also,by killing Zod Superman is the last Kryptonian, and Earth his new home.
Knowing what he did,he’s angry and in pain for his actions knowing he’s the last of his kind.

The SFX were awesome(Superman finally gets to punch some bad guys)
The flashback scenes were pretty good (it gave us a idea on how Clark was dealing with his powers)

Overall this the best Superman movie to date.
The one problem I had with the movie is they didn’t explain why Krypton were using Engenics to create their people.

4 out of 5
It’s a must see movie (screw the critics)
I loved it,and I’m a Marvel Comics fan girl LOL.

Minorities actors casted in white roles (comic book)

May 4, 2013

I’m a member of a comic book forum and they were talking about how minorities are being cast in roles that were originally white characters.

For example Idris Elba played Heimdall in Thor (Heimdall is white in the comic books)

Anyway, there’s this rumor that Fox may cast a African-American to play Johnny Storm in their Fantastic Four reboot.

This news got a lot of comic book fans upset because they see it as trying to get minorities to see it or Fox not being faithful to the source material.

What’s my take on this subject?
Well,It really depends on the character they’re casting.

Characters like Superman,Batman,Wolverine,Captain America,Wonder Woman, and others I can’t see being played by minorities actors mainly because they’re so iconic that it would upset both fans and non-fans.

But if it’s like a 2nd tier or supporting characters I could see it happen.

Jamie Foxx is playing Electro in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel.
Lawrence Fishburne is playing Perry White in Man of Steel.
Kerry Washington played Alicia Masters in Fox’s Fantastic Four movies.

So,it can work but it really depends on the character.

For me,All I want is an actor that can really play the part well (doesn’t matter what their skin color is)
Could an African-American actor play Johnny Storm?
Don’t know,but it’s a subject worth talking about.

Let me hear what you think about this subject.

Savage Wolverine #1

January 17, 2013

For years I’ve flirted with the possible idea of maybe reading a Marvel series. Growing up I’ve always been a DC. But with the new Marvel Now line I have the chance to jump into a new series without missing a beat. This past Wednesday Savage Wolverine came out. Cards, Comics and Collectibles, located in Reisterstown Maryland, had a release party for the comic with Frank Cho on hand. I figured this would be a good series to start with. After all, Frank Cho is a great writer and artist, and I couldn’t pass up the chance to get him to sign a comic for me.

The series opens with a S.H.I.E.L.D mission underway. Agent McSwiggin and his crew (which includes agents we’ll never know as well as the lovely Shanna the She Devil) are off to explore the Forbidden Island. Things don’t exactly go the way they planned and the ship crashes on the island. Eight months later Wolverine also crashes on the island mysteriously. He wakes up to a dinosaur attacking him, which ultimately leads him to a group of Neanderthals carrying a nearly dead Agent McSwiggin. In his last breath he tells Wolverine where his ship has crashed, and that’s when Wolverine and Shanna cross paths.

The first issue is a great build up to what I hope turns out to be a great comic run. Frank Chowrites both Shanna and Wolverine with such care that it’s easy for a non Marvel fan to become fans of these two. The art is also top notch, something I’ve come to expect from Mr. Cho over the years. For $3.99 I feel you’ll be getting your money’s worth, regardless if you’re a Marvel or a DC…or if you’ve never read a comic at all!

Disney buys Lucasfilms

October 31, 2012

As you all know that Disney bought Lucasfilms for $4 billion on Tuesday.
I was surprised by this news as everyone else was.

I think in the long run this will benefit both parties.
I want to see different filmmakers take on the Star Wars franchise.

I love what Disney is doing with the Marvel films, and I’m very optimistic of what they’ll do with the Star Wars brand.
As long as Lucas isn’t involved in writing or directing the films,It will survive.

I don’t know what will happen to the Star Wars comic books from Dark Horse Comics.
My guess is that once their contract expires,it would go to Marvel Comics.

If there’s one franchise that needs a “reboot” it’s Star Wars

Also,I want Joss Whedon for a Star Wars trilogy :)

Dredd movie review

September 21, 2012

Here’s my review of Dredd.
I can safely say that Dredd is the movie that Judge Dredd fans like myself have been waiting for.

Karl Urban is awesome as Dredd.
He makes Batman look like Barney the Purple Dinosaur (Sorry Lauren)
Some may complain of Dredd not having any character development(but he doesn’t need one)
He also doesn’t need a origin story either (That’s not his style)

I really liked Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson.
She really had good character development as the movie went on.

I love the chemistry between Dredd & Anderson.
The one-liners were clever & it doesn’t sound cheap.

MaMa was a evil villain, but this was the Judge Dredd show.

This movie is not for the weak of heart or stomach.
The violence in the movie is pretty intense, but they’re great.

The Slo-Mo scenes were great & surreal(They even look great in 3D)

I do recommend seeing it in 3D.

The only thing I didn’t like was the used swear words f*** & s***
I really liked the future swear words in the comic books.

The movie isn’t too long or too short.

They’re some easter eggs in the film if you look closely.

Overall,I give it 4 out of 5.

Superman & Wonder Woman controversy.

September 1, 2012

As pretty much everyone know that Superman & Wonder Woman hooked up on Justice League #12.
I really don’t see why this is such a big deal.
This isn’t the first time Superman & Wonder Wonder hooked up in comic books.
Kingdom Come being the most famous of this hook up.

Much like the Catwoman controversy,I really don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
I actually like the idea of Superman & Wonder Woman hooking up.
It makes more sense than Sups dating Lois Lane.
Plus,Lane seems more into her work than she is with having a serious relationship.

How will DC makes this work is up in the air,but I like the potential of seeing 2 super powered beings having a romantic relationship.

Archie #635

August 7, 2012

While on a recent outing to the comic shop Cards, Comics and Collectibles in Reisterstown, Maryland, I picked up Archie #635. It’s been a few years since I’ve read an actual ‘Archie’ comic. Over the past few years however, the Archie of my youth has evolved into a more complex universe that tackles real world problems in a way that children can comprehend and understand. The story is written by Alex Segura, who does a fantastic job of connecting these timeless characters with real world problems. Accompanying him is the very talented Gisele Lagace on pencils, who gives these characters a slight manga twist.

In this issue the occupy protests have fallen into Riverdale. Led by an Andy Martinez, the 99% are protesting the 1% of Riverdale (which apparently consists of only three people; Veronica, her father, and Reggie). Caught in the middle is Archie. While he certainly is a 99% he doesn’t necessarily agree or see eye to eye with the protests. The gang does have a few things to say. Betty mentions that her mother had to pick up a second job. Reggie says he doesn’t care, that his mind of more concerned with what luxury car he’s taking this weekend. Kevin calls him lucky and Veronica says luck has no part in being successful. Her father built his fortune on his own. Things start to get heated until Mr. Weatherbee informs everyone they are late for class, but they can pick up this conversation during detention.

The next day Archie comes across the protesters again. This time his friends have joined in as well. Kevin, Betty and Jughead all urge him to join, but Archie is still not convinced that protesting is the right thing to do. Everything starts to heat up when the media appears, followed by the 1%. Mr. Lodge gets into an argument with the leader, the mayor shuts the protest down, and someone almost gets arrested! However, this is an Archie comic, so there is a happy ending.

While the story is great, it also gives us new insights into many characters. We learn that Mrs. Cooper had to get a second job. Jughead may or may not have been in jail (since he’s “heard” the food is bad) and that Veronica needs to grow thicker skin (she’s also used to dating guys who have no money or a car). We also see that Mr. Lodge can be reasonable. In the end Kevin sums up what’s been going on in this comic and the Archie universe as a whole best:

“Riverdale’s always been about more than the one percent or the 99 percent–It’s about the 100 percent! It’s a safe place where everyone is welcome!”

Indeed it is, Kevin!

Batman:Arkham City review.

July 11, 2012

I finally finished Batman:Arkham City for the PS3 (I was busy lol )

Anyway,here’s my review.
Everything you loved about Batman:Arkham Asylum is back, but with more stuff to do.
It takes place in a city/prison by Hugo Strange.
You still have to go up against the Joker though.

Gameplay is the same (which is a good thing)
You also have side missions to do (which adds a nice change of pace from the story)
I like the “open world” setting of the game instead of Arkham Asylum.
You have new gadgets to play this time around, while favorites like Remote Control Batarang & Explosive Gel return.
After finishing the game, you can play New Game + with all the gadgets you get(but the game is harder so you better use the stuff you have)
The soundtrack is amazing,I think it can compete against any movie soundtrack out there.

One of the things I didn’t like AA was the lack of Challenge Maps.
Arkham City changes that by adding more Challenge Maps.

I love Catwoman in Arkham City.
Her fighting style is very different from Batman (which is great since you have another character to play around with)
If you bought the Robin & Nightwing DLC (Like I did),they play differently as well.
Unfortunately you can’t play them in Story Mode,But you can play them in The Challenge Maps & 2-D side scrolling campaign.

The Riddler is back with more Riddler Trophies to collect.

Overall I loved playing this game.
I give it a 5 out of 5.

As for Batman:Arkham Asylum,I give it a 4 out of 5.

Batman:Arkham City is one of the few games that surpasses the first one.

If you’re new to the games,I recommend playing Batman:Arkham Asylum first then Arkham City.
I think resident Batman fan Lauren would give this her seal of Approval :)

New Sailor Moon Anime in 2013!

July 6, 2012

Big news for fans of the classic anime, Sailor Moon is getting a reboot in the summer of 2013! Kodansha and Takeuchi announced on Friday that the manga would get a fresh new anime to accompany it, with Momoiro Clover Z doing the theme song.

While I am positively excited over this, I have a few questions;

Will Takeuchi be more involved in the anime?
Will it cover all five seasons?
Will they finally have a consistent animation team (ala Sailor Stars) so every episode looks the same?
I can’t imagine anyone else but the original cast as the voices. Will they be coming back?
If it’d going to follow the manga more closely, does that mean the Doom Tree saga saga will be dropped?
Will we see Luna, Artemis, and Diana in human form?
Will there be a Sailor V anime special to go with it? Please?
There’s like 50 billion more that have popped into my head.

And the most important question of them all;

Will the American audiences get to see it (legally) as well as the original 200 episodes? I remember clear as day how hard it was being a Sailor Moon fan in the 90s. That bug hit me in 95, and trust me. It wasn’t easy. It was a big deal when the manga was being released by Mixxzine (Tokyopop) but they did a horrible job with it. While we are finally getting the manga we’ve always deserved, we still have yet to get ALL 200 episodes uncut.
